Before joining OceanTech, Prytz’s career path was anything but traditional. Growing up in a workshop alongside his father, he developed an early fascination for creating and fixing things. He later worked as a diagnostic technician and mechanic in the automotive industry, turning his childhood passion into a profession.
“I’ve always enjoyed making things, whether at work or in my free time. For me, it’s a way of life,” Prytz explains.
Driven by a desire to develop further, Tore went back to school, earning a technical degree in mechanical engineering while working full-time as a crane technician. When he completed his studies, he found himself facing a difficult choice—three job offers, each with different opportunities.
He chose OceanTech: “I had long dreamt of working offshore. When OceanTech offered me the chance in 2019, it was an easy decision. The combination of practical, hands-on engineering and complex offshore operations was exactly what I was looking for.”
From concept to offshore execution
At OceanTech, Prytz’s role spans the entire engineering process—from the first sketch of an idea to final assembly and offshore execution.
“I get to follow the whole journey. I start by creating 3D models, develop rough designs, and then help build the equipment I’ve designed. I also join offshore operations, either as offshore team lead, pilot, or rope access technician. This immediate feedback—seeing whether your design actually works in real conditions—is incredibly rewarding.”
This complete involvement is something that sets OceanTech apart, Prytz believes: “You are not just designing something on a screen—you are out there making it real.”
Prytz describes the work environment at OceanTech as informal, open, and dynamic.
“There’s a lot of freedom here. People speak their minds, and there’s room for disagreement. Sometimes discussions can get heated because we’re all passionate and want to find the best solution. But we all pull in the same direction. We want to succeed together.”
He emphasises the strong team spirit and low absenteeism: “I genuinely look forward to coming to work every day. We have a fantastic team with a broad mix of expertise and personalities. It’s a place where you feel valued and supported.”
Growing fast, learning fast
In his time at OceanTech, Prytz has experienced significant professional growth.
“You get responsibility early here. When I joined, we were a small company. I quickly found myself in offshore leadership roles, which accelerated my development.”
His work has taken him around the world—from early projects in Denmark and Azerbaijan to recent engagements in Brazil and Australia. One project, however, stands out.
“I’m especially proud of an inspection study we carried out at Ekofisk. We developed an underwater inspection robot to assess the structural integrity of aging infrastructure—extending its lifetime safely. It was something the industry had tried to solve for years without success. We made it happen.”
The project led to further development of OceanTech’s autonomous inspection system, ANDWIS, in collaboration with SINTEF—a process Prytz describes as both demanding and incredibly rewarding.
Prytz believes OceanTech is the perfect workplace for people who don’t just want to design solutions, but also want to build them and see them in action.
“We need people who are passionate about creating—not just from the school bench, but with practical experience and a drive to make things work in the real world. If you enjoy problem-solving, taking responsibility, and working across disciplines, you’ll thrive here.”
At OceanTech, no two days are the same. Whether you’re developing cutting-edge splash zone technology, leading offshore operations, or collaborating with some of the industry’s most creative engineers, you’ll be part of a team where passion meets purpose.
