Many of our engineers, particularly those with a background in marine technology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), first encounter OceanTech through project collaborations. Peter Sommerseth Jaer was no exception. As a Technical Trainee at Linjebygg, he was introduced to OceanTech in 2018 during a splash zone project for Equinor at the Heidrun platform in the Norwegian Sea.
“The chemistry was great,” he recalls, describing the excitement of working in splash zone operations.
“These are highly complex operations, and I was drawn to the challenge. The ability to think fast and solve problems under pressure can be the difference between success and a code-red situation,” he explains.
Beyond theory: Engineering in action
To date, OceanTech has successfully delivered over 80 projects across 50 offshore installations worldwide, collaborating with industry leaders such as Equinor, Hess, Repsol, ConocoPhillips, and Woodside. Our remotely operated robotic solutions push the boundaries of splash zone capabilities, surpassing those of divers and ROVs.
By integrating field-proven technology with rope access and lifting techniques, we optimise operations—reducing costs, enhancing safety, and minimising environmental impact.
While a strong academic background is valuable, real-world execution is what truly distinguishes OceanTech engineers, Jaer believes.
“At OceanTech, you are not just executing predefined tasks—you also need to develop solutions from scratch.”
“You have the freedom to explore, experiment, and contribute across multiple technical disciplines. Whether it is extending asset lifetimes or designing safer, more efficient offshore solutions, the work here is anything but standard.”
He highlights the diverse expertise within OceanTech’s team, which includes specialists in automation, electronics, and an increasing focus on cybernetics.
“To tackle the complex challenges we face, we often need to think far beyond standard theoretical approaches. Collaborating with some of the most inventive minds—true Reodor Felgen types—ensures that every day here is an intellectual adventure.”
No two days are the same
OceanTech delivers cleaning, inspection, modification, and repair services in the splash zone. The projects are diverse, ranging from marine growth removal and non-destructive testing to modifying caissons, anodes, and clamps, as well as carrying out repairs.
As a turnkey provider, we manage all project interfaces, ensuring seamless execution from design and engineering to equipment testing, operator training, offshore setup, and implementation.
“No two days are the same. One day, we may focus on design and development; the next, we are testing equipment at our test centre. Every day brings new challenges, whether in technical problem-solving or logistical planning—making adaptability one of the most valuable skills,” says Jaer.
“One of the most rewarding aspects of working at OceanTech is the variety. It is not just about sitting behind a desk. It is about thinking on your feet, collaborating with experts across disciplines, and tackling real-time challenges.”
OceanTech is in a growth phase, expanding its international presence—a development that Jaer finds particularly exciting:
“Right now, I am on my way to Aberdeen for a meeting with a design and engineering partner. Next month, I might be working on a project in Australia or Brazil.”
Flat structure fuels innovation
Unlike traditional corporate hierarchies, OceanTech operates with a flat structure, fostering direct and inclusive decision-making.
“You are not just another cog in the machine—you actively influence and drive company decisions. Our close-knit environment ensures that everyone, from engineers to senior management, collaborates to solve problems effectively,” says Jaer.
He also highlights the strength of OceanTech’s project teams:
“It is almost like a project family, where colleagues support each other both professionally and personally. While there is always a lot happening offshore, we prioritise team spirit and work-life balance. Our culture ensures that everyone is valued, and collaboration is at the heart of everything we do.”
If you’re looking for an environment where problem-solving is a way of life, where no challenge is too complex, and where you can truly make an impact, OceanTech is the place for you. Here, you are not just part of a company—you are part of a team that thrives on innovation and cutting-edge engineering.
